Scabiosa stellata is grown primarily for its sculptural seed heads, which form intricate, ball-shaped pods in soft green before maturing to a warm, papery beige. These unique forms add exceptional texture to both fresh and dried arrangements and are highly sought after for their architectural quality. Plants flower first, offering a brief window of delicate, light blue star-shaped blooms, followed by months of ornamental pods.

HOW TO CARE FOR SCABIOSA STELLATA
PLANTING Grows best in full sun and well-drained soil. Sow seeds directly outdoors after the last frost or start indoors 4 to 6 weeks earlier. Lightly cover seeds, as they need minimal darkness to germinate. Space plants 12 inches apart. Germination typically occurs within 10 to 14 days.
GROWING Water regularly during establishment, then reduce once plants are established. Scabiosa prefers moderate moisture and good drainage. Deadhead flowers early in the season to encourage continued blooming before seed heads form. For seed pod production, allow later blooms to mature naturally. Plants may require light support in windy locations.
HARVESTING For fresh use, harvest seed heads when green and firm. For dried arrangements, cut once pods have turned papery beige and hang upside down to dry in a dark, well-ventilated space.
