HOW TO CARE FOR NIGELLA
PLANTING
Nigella thrives in full sun and well-drained soil with average fertility. For continuous blooms, direct sow seeds outdoors 3-4 times early in the season, spacing sowings 2-3 weeks apart. In mild winter climates, seeds can be fall-sown. Light aids germination. Keep soil temperature between 16-18°C for 10-14 days for optimal germination. If starting indoors, sow seeds 4-6 weeks before the last frost and transplant carefully, as Nigella is sensitive to root disturbance. Space plants 2-9 inches apart, depending on desired density.
GROWING
Nigella is an annual that grows best in full sun. It requires minimal care once established. Water sparingly, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming or allow pods to form for ornamental purposes. Self-seeds readily; collect seeds if you want to control its spread.
HARVESTING
For fresh cuts, harvest when flower buds are fully coloured or when seed pods are just beginning to develop. For dried arrangements, wait until seed pods are firm and mature. Cut stems with clean snips and hang upside down in a dark, dry, well-ventilated space for drying. Nigella’s unique seed pods make striking additions to both fresh and dried floral designs.
