Larkspur - Fancy Belladonna

HOW TO CARE FOR LARKSPUR

PLANTING

Larkspur thrives in well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH of 6.5 to 7.5. Select a location with full sun or light shade. For best results, sow seeds directly outdoors in late fall or early spring. In areas with mild winters, fall planting allows for earlier blooms.

For spring planting, chill seeds in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks before sowing to improve germination. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 6-8 inches apart. Avoid covering seeds too heavily, as light aids germination. Soil temperature should be around 10-15°C for successful sprouting.

GROWING

Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during germination and the growing season. Water at the base of plants to prevent fungal diseases. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Larkspur does not require staking unless exposed to strong winds. Fertilize sparingly with a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer to promote strong blooms. Thin seedlings to 6-12 inches apart to improve air circulation and prevent overcrowding.

Protect young plants from slugs and snails, which can cause significant damage.

HARVESTING

Harvest larkspur in the morning when 1/3 to 1/2 of the flowers on the stem are open. Cut stems with clean, sharp snips and immediately place them in water. Regular cutting encourages more blooms and prolongs the flowering season.

Avoid harvesting during hot midday hours to reduce wilting. Hang stems upside down in a dry, dark space if drying for everlasting arrangements.
