HOW TO CARE FOR ECHINOPS
PLANTING Echinops prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Plant in average, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0–8.0. Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost in 50-cell flats or seedling containers. Cover seeds lightly, as some light aids germination. Keep soil temperature between 18-24°C for germination, which occurs in 14-21 days. Harden off seedlings before transplanting outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Space plants 18-24 inches apart to prevent overcrowding. Direct sowing is also possible once the soil temperature reaches 18°C.
GROWING Echinops is drought-tolerant once established and thrives in hot, dry, and even poor soil conditions. Avoid overwatering, as this can cause root rot. Divide plants every 4-5 years to prevent overcrowding and maintain vigour. Provide consistent full sun for best blooms, though partial shade is acceptable.
HARVESTING Echinops produces striking globe-shaped flowers that are ideal for fresh or dried arrangements. Harvest when 1/2 to 3/4 of the globe has turned its characteristic white colour. Use clean snips and avoid waiting too long, as the globes will shatter if harvested late. To dry, hang stems upside down in a cool, dark place.
