Filipendula vulgaris produces airy clusters of soft white blooms held on slender stems above finely textured foliage. Its delicate, meadow-like presence brings a sense of movement and lightness to both garden plantings and floral arrangements. Flowering in late spring to early summer, this perennial is especially valued for its naturalistic character and ability to blend seamlessly with other seasonal blooms. Bees and beneficial insects are strongly drawn to its nectar-rich flowers.
50 seeds minimum.
HOW TO CARE FOR FILIPENDULA
PLANTING Prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Seeds benefit from a period of cold stratification. Sow outdoors in fall or early spring, or cold stratify indoors for 3 to 4 weeks before sowing. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface, as light aids germination. Germination may take 14 to 30 days.
GROWING Keep soil consistently moist, especially during establishment. Filipendula does not tolerate prolonged drought. Plants benefit from rich, organic soil amended with compost. Once established, it is relatively low maintenance. Cut back spent blooms to encourage tidy growth, though flowering is typically once per season. Divide mature plants every few years to maintain vigour.
HARVESTING Harvest flowering stems in the morning when blooms are just opening. Filipendula works best in naturalistic, meadow-style arrangements. Flowers may also be air dried for soft textural use.
