Velouette stands out for its elegant, rich cranberry and bicolour petals in soft blush pink edged with deeper rose tones. Each bloom has a refined, graphic quality that adds contrast and interest without overwhelming an arrangement. Plants are well branched and productive, with strong stems that make this variety particularly useful for cut flower work. Velouette flowers generously through the summer and attracts a wide range of beneficial insects.

30 seeds minimum.

HOW TO CARE FOR COSMOS

PLANTING
Cosmos thrive in full sun and well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Seeds can be sown directly outdoors after the last frost, or started indoors 3 to 4 weeks earlier for an earlier start. Sow seeds lightly on the soil surface and cover very thinly, as light aids germination. Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart once established. Germination typically occurs within 5 to 10 days.

GROWING
Cosmos prefer relatively lean soil and do not require heavy feeding. Excess fertilizer can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Water regularly while plants are establishing, then reduce watering once established, as cosmos are fairly drought tolerant. Pinching young plants can encourage branching and more flowers. Regular harvesting or deadheading will promote continuous blooming throughout the season. Tall varieties may benefit from light support in windy areas.

HARVESTING
For cut flowers, harvest when blooms are just beginning to open, ideally in the morning. Flowers are best used within a few days of cutting.
