HOW TO CARE FOR IBERIS

PLANTING

Candytuft thrives in well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH of 6.5 to 7.5. Choose a location with full sun for the best flowering, though it can tolerate light shade.

Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring or late fall for natural stratification. For spring sowing, chill seeds in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks before planting. Scatter seeds on the surface of the soil and press them lightly to ensure good soil contact. Do not cover seeds deeply, as they require light to germinate. Space seeds 8-12 inches apart, and thin seedlings as needed.

GROWING

Candytuft prefers well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH of 6.5 to 7.5. Choose a sunny location, though it can tolerate light shade.

Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring after the last frost, or in late fall for natural overwintering. Scatter seeds on the soil surface and press lightly to ensure good contact. Do not bury seeds deeply, as they need light to germinate. Space seeds 8-12 inches apart. Thin seedlings as they grow to provide enough room for mature plants.

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage lush blooms. Prune plants lightly after flowering to maintain a neat shape and encourage a second flush of flowers. Mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Protect from slugs and snails, which may damage young seedlings.

HARVESTING

Candytuft flowers can be cut when fully open for fresh arrangements or left in the garden to attract pollinators. To encourage continuous blooming, deadhead spent flowers regularly. Trim back foliage slightly after the flowering season to maintain a tidy appearance and prepare for the next bloom cycle.

For a naturalized look, allow some flowers to go to seed, which may result in self-sowing and more plants in the following seasons.
